Many people develop gallstones. They occur in the gallbladder, which is a pear-shaped bag lying just below the liver, level with the rib cage on the right side of the abdomen.

If you have been diagnosed with gallstones, you may be advised to have an operation to remove your gallbladder.

The most common operation for gallstones is removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) with the stones inside it. The operation is nearly always carried out with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery under a general anaesthetic and many patients are able to go home the same day.

However, sometimes the treatment of gallstones may require more than removal of the gallbladder: complicated gallstone disease.
